[Biblioteca] Track & Wheels

When I do a job, I like to document myself, see real images and how other model makers do it.
And in this same order.

For this reason, I often get an occasional book that talks about specific techniques about what I want to work on.

And with the work of the M-163 I had to document myself in something that, although I know the final result I want to achieve and the technique that I very possibly use at the end, I did not quite get it clear: The caterpillars and the wheeled train.

And I've done with a copy of caterpillars and wheels, in English

A book of very good quality and bill, for just 10, - €, which explains how to do some techniques to age the wheels and the caterpillars of our vehicles.

First I will comment on what is in the book, and, in the end, what I have missed.

The entire book, of 84 pages, is structured in 6 chapters.

The first chapter is about the preparation of truck wheels and the like and tank rolling train.
Not bad, because in many of the books that talk about the subject, they forget this point, or assume that we are virtuous in the preparation, elimination of sprues and burrs, sanding and highlighting of tire drawing.

Talk about the different ways of treating plastic, resin or rubber wheels, depending on the kit purchased.

The second chapter talks about the painting of the wheels.

Interesting the indication of how to apply the pigment on the wheels, so that they look not only dusty, but with the characteristic dust filtered in the rubber, that only with water under pressure will jump.

They also give us instructions on how to put snow on the wheels. An interesting mini tutorial.

The third chapter, do not indicate how to "retouch" the wheels of the train of a tank, from the tear of the rubber by the use, to the break by some impact of mine or projectile, going through a wheel burned by the intense fire.

Tell us and teach how to use simple and basic pigments in the mud of these elements, I can assure you that it is priceless.

And as indicated, teaching how we can treat a wheel with major defects, is another interesting detail of this book.

Another of the techniques that are often forgotten in many books and magazine articles about this element: bare metal due to chafing and wear

The 4th chapter is where he starts talking about the caterpillars, more or less in the middle of the book.

In this section we commit the three types of caterpillars that we can find in the kits and their assembly: link to plastic link, link to metal link and vinyl, also known as "rubber".

In the painting of the caterpillars, we see that depending on the material of these, we can use different techniques, both for painting, and for the effects of weathering.

The powder and mud-based pigments, is the best in techniques for chains, for caterpillars, I've seen in time.

They also indicate how to oxidize the chains in use of the tanks.
In the different techniques that we can find for different materials, especially for metal chains.

Finally, about 12 pages of model photos with different finishes, both wheels and tracks.
Both 2GM in Europe, and modern in desert.

And finally a couple of pages with examples of wheels and muddy chains in different terrains.

It really is a book to have in the library, especially when you start and you go into the details of the effects in the kits, but once you know what can be done, it is relegated to a simple book of basic knowledge.

It is a book with formidable and detailed photographs, and that talks about basic weathering techniques in wheels and caterpillars, I notice the following deficiencies.
- Although the title is Tracks & Wheels, the first part is on wheels and the second on tracks, the reverse of the title. It's silly, I know, but it did not cost anything to put the title upside down, especially when the theme of wheels are 40 pages, and caterpillars are 21 pages.
- Although there is a single page in which it indicates what to use and what technique to apply in wheels of desert environment, and several armored ones appear (one of the DAK and another current one), there is no mention whatsoever to use and as in this type of ambience with the caterpillars, such complex effects for the armored chains. This lack is notable, since at present, the vast majority of armed conflicts occur in this type of terrain.
- Although it is very good to indicate that we can do, I miss a book with PaP of some more usual techniques. I know it's not the purpose of the book, but they could have made some indication of what the purpose of the book is on the back cover.
- Even if you put a lot of photography, which is always appreciated, but this time I find that there is too much photo for so few pages and so little explanatory text.

For my work of caterpillars, both 28mm and 1/35, I had to expand my library with other books and magazines, which I will be teaching you, since I have known little this time.
As you know, I always speak excellent things about AK books, and especially about this series in small and manageable page format, but this one in particular, I am very sorry, personally I find it scarce, although necessary. There is no other, as far as I know, in the market.
