Oil, fuel and grease

Ya hemos hecho la mayoría de efectos especiales para el Weathering.

We have already done most of the special effects for Weathering.

Todos los tanques, desde la época de la 1GM con sus primero pretanques, llevan manchas de aceites, combustible y grasa que, más por falta de tiempo que por descuido, caracterizan la superficie de los tanques en tiempo de guerra.

Por lo que ahora le toca el turno a los efectos de los líquidos de los motores.

All the tanks, from the time of the 1GM with their first pretanks, carry stains of oils, fuel and grease that, more for lack of time than carelessness, characterize the surface of the tanks in time of war.
So now it is the turn to the effects of the fluids of the engines.

Aceite / Oil

A parte de la grasa, que ya la tocaremos al final de estas técnicas, el aceite es el elemento que más abunda sobre la superficie de los tanques.

Este se debe al líquido derramado por el forzado de maquinaria, mal ajuste de tapas, tapetas y cierrres en general.

El aceite sirve para que los elementos que están constantemente en fricción, puedan funcionar correctamente sin que lleguen a recalentarse. Y es una forma bastante habitual de licuarse la grasa por el exceso de calor.

Para ello he utilizado el Efecto de Vallejo Manchas de Aceite (Weathering Effect 813).

La forma de aplicarlo es sencillo, ya que es a base de chorretones y manchas.

Debo imaginar donde estarían estos chorretones y goterones en un blindado, debido al aceitado constante para que las zonas de rozadura y se queden bloqueados.

El anillo interior y exterior de la torreta suele llevar grasa que constantemente era realimentado por aceite para que esta no se volviese extremadamente densa.

Otros sitios son bisagras y toda la zona de engranajes del motor.

Apart from the fat, which we will touch at the end of these techniques, oil is the most abundant element on the surface of tanks.
This is due to the liquid spilled by the forced machinery, bad fit of lids, covers and closures in general.
The oil serves so that the elements that are constantly in friction, can work properly without they get to overheat. And it's a fairly common way of liquefying fat from excess heat.

For this I have used the Effect of Vallejo Oil Stains (Weathering Effect 813).
The way to apply it is simple, since it is based on chorretones and spots.
I have to imagine where these gussets and gutters would be in an armored one, due to the constant oiling so that the chafing areas remain blocked.

The inner and outer ring of the turret usually carries fat that was constantly fed by oil so that it does not become extremely dense.
Other sites are hinges and the entire gear area of the engine.

Por ello el primer sitio donde he aplicado el efecto aceite es en la zona del anillo de giro de la torreta, de forma aleatoria y sólo en algunos puntos.

También en las bisagras de las escotillas del conductor y del radioperador.

For this reason the first place where I have applied the oil effect is in the area of the turning ring of the turret, randomly and only in some points.
Also on the hinges of the hatchways of the driver and the radio operator.

Las bisagras de las tapas de los depósitos de combustibles, también se los aplico, pero no en exceso, que posteriormente colocaré efecto combustible derramado.

En la plancha de acceso al motor, tanto en las bisagras como alrededor del mismo, en especial en la parte inferior de la misma, aplico chorretones, ya que esta zona es un plano inclinado y el aceite que puede salpicar del motor, al final termina saliendo por las chapas mal ajustadas.

The hinges of the lids of fuel tanks, I also apply them, but not in excess, which later I will place spilled fuel effect.

In the access plate to the motor, both on the hinges and around it, especially in the lower part of it, I apply watered down, since this area is an inclined plane and the oil that can splash the engine, which ends up coming out for badly adjusted sheets.

Estos chorretones puedo prolongarlos hasta los laterales, pero sin excederme.

Otra zona que siempre está castigada por aceite y grasa, es la zona de lo bogíes.

En esta zona he sido generoso, ya que posteriormente colocare grasa y más efectos.

Si vemos fotos tanto de la 2GM como actuales, esta zona siempre esta manchada de aceite, grasa y el barrillo típico de la mezcla de ambos con la tierra del camino.

Una vez hemos trabajado el cuerpo del tanque, hago lo mismo con la torreta.

In this area I have been generous, since later I put grease and more effects.

Ya tenemos terminada el efecto aceite en el primer tanque de 76mm. Ahora le toca el turno al Jumbo de 76mm, que lo trataremos exactamente igual.

Quiero hacer una observación. El producto de Vallejo me ha sorprendido porque el aceite tiene el brillo característico de este producto, tal como se puede apreciar en las fotografías. Otros fabricantes tienen un producto similar en esmalte que, cuando seca, se vuelve mate o casi mate.

I want to make an observation. The product of Vallejo surprised me because the oil has the characteristic brightness of this product, as you can see in the photographs. Other manufacturers have a similar product in enamel that, when dry, becomes matte or almost matte.

Combustible / Fuel

Para hacer el efecto de combustible derramado, me he planteado que las dotaciones de los tanques que estoy haciendo son muy descuidados (no era norma general, pero así lo he decidido para estas unidades), por lo que voy a excederme un poco, para que quede muy pronunciado el efecto.

El combustible derramado tiene una peculiaridad; a parte de que el combustible, como es líquido, brilla, pero cuesta mucho más en desaparecer, si no es limpiado.

Tambien indicar que el combustible derramado, si no cae por el movimiento del vehículo, se acumula en rincones, por lo que forma un barrillo con el polvo de la zona, oscureciendo esa zona del combustible.

Para dar el efecto de combustible derramado en multiples ocasione, lo primero que hago es crear un barrillo con el efecto Manchas de Combustible (Weathering Effect 814) y el pigmento Tierra Europea (AK-042). Utilizo este pigmento, ya que es el color tierra más claro que he encontrado. No deseo que el color del combustible se oscurezca en exceso.

Para ello utilizo una paleta con pocillos coloco primero el pigmento y con ayuda de una pipeta, voy añadiendo el efecto combustible. Es la misma técnica ya explicada en el artículo anterior, para crear Suciedad Acumulada.

To make the effect of spilled fuel, I have considered that the endowments of the tanks that I am doing are very careless (it was not a general rule, but this is what I have decided for these units), so I am going to exceed a bit, so that the effect is very pronounced.

The spilled fuel has a peculiarity; apart from that the fuel, as it is liquid, shines, but it costs much more to disappear, if it is not cleaned.
Also indicate that the spilled fuel, if it does not fall by the movement of the vehicle, accumulates in corners, so it forms a barrel with the dust of the area, obscuring that area of the fuel.

To give the effect of fuel spilled in multiple occasions, the first thing I do is create a mud with the effect of Fuel Stains (Weathering Effect 814) and the pigment European Earth (AK-042). I use this pigment, since it is the lightest earth color I have found. I do not want the color of the fuel to darken excessively.

For this I use a palette with wells I put the pigment first and with the help of a pipette, I add the fuel effect. It is the same technique already explained in the previous article, to create Accumulated Dirt.

Este barrillo creado con el efecto combustible lo deposito alrededor de las tapas de los depósitos de combustible. Y sólo ahí.

This mud created with the fuel effect I deposit it around the lids of the fuel tanks. And only there.

El efecto combustible es de un tono amarillo rojizo, por lo que al mezclarlo con el pigmento, al secarse, queda de un tono rojizo.

The combustible effect is a reddish yellow tone, so when mixed with the pigment, when dried, it remains a reddish tone.

Por cierto, como el efecto de Vallejo tiene un aditivo para que se adhiera a la superficie, como todos los acrílicos, debemos eliminar el exceso cuando el barrillo está aún húmedo, con los bastoncitos con algodón o una espumilla desmaquillante, mojado con diluyente para aerógrafo. Después será muy difícil eliminarlo.

No es igual que cuando añadimos agua o White Spirit.

By the way, as the effect of Vallejo has an additive to adhere to the surface, like all acrylics, we must eliminate the excess when the mud is still wet, with cotton swabs or a makeup remover mop, dipped with airbrush thinner. Afterwards it will be very difficult to eliminate it.
It is not the same as when we add water or White Spirit.

Una vez bien seco el barrillo aplicado (para estar tranquilo, lo ha hecho de un día para otro), aplico el efecto combustible directamente, realizando manchas y algo de chorretones, dejando charquitos de combustible.

Aunque es excesivo el efecto que he aplicado, lo he hecho para que se vea exagerado.

Once the mud has been applied dry to be calm (it has been done from one day to the next), I apply the fuel effect directly, making stains and some spilled liquid, leaving puddles of fuel.
Although the effect that I have applied is excessive, I have done it to make it look exaggerated.

Una vez seco, al igual que el aceite, el efecto combustible brilla, como tiene que ser.

Aquí podemos ver el resultado del efecto combustible en el primer tanque de 76mm.

Once dry, like oil, the fuel effect shines, as it has to be correctly.

Aprovechando el momento y como las rejillas no terminan de quedar lo oscuras que a mí me gustaría, he utilizado el efecto suciedad mecánica de AK Interactive para ello (AK -082)

Y lo he utilizado a sabiendas de que este efecto, cuando seca, es mate.

Taking advantage of the moment and how the grids do not finish being as dark as I would like, I used the mechanical dirt effect of AK Interactive for it (AK -082)

And I have used it knowing that this effect, when dry, is matt.

Grasa / Grease

Para representar la grasa, he utilizado un producto antiguo, que AK ha recuperado y ahora se vuelve a comercializar. Es la Mezcla de Manchas de Aceite y Grasa de Mig Productions (P-40).

Suelo utilizar este producto porque es espeso y brilla, como la grasa.

Este efecto lo aplico primero en toda la zona que representa que están los anillos de giro de la torreta.

To represent fat, I used an old product, which AK has recovered and now it is re-marketed. It is the Mixture of Oil and Grease Stains from Mig Productions (P-40).
I usually use this product because it is thick and shiny, like grease.

This effect is applied first in the whole area that represents the turret's rotation rings.

En el primer 76mm lo coloco en toda la zona interior.

In the first 76mm I place it in the entire interior area.

Y aplico el efecto de grasa derramada en algunos puntos del aro externo, en especial donde ya había colocado el efecto aceite.

And I apply the effect of grease spilled in some points of the outer ring, especially where I had already placed the oil effect.

Y como había comentado antes, también en los bogíes.

Y en esta zona, con alegría y sin miramientos.

And as I had said before, also in the Bogies.
And in this area, with joy and without regard.

Y procedemos de la misma forma con el resto de shermans.

And we proceed in the same way with the rest of the Shermans.

Terminada esta fase, bien podemos dejar aquí el trabajo y ya podemos jugar con los tanques a cualquier wargame del frente del Oeste de Europa, como por ejemplo Normandía o Holanda.

After this phase, we can leave the work here and we can play with tanks any wargame of the Western European front, such as Normandy or Holland.

Como se puede observar, una vez montado el tanque, los efectos que aparentemente eran muy exagerados, quedan más acorde con el conjunto, por lo menos visualmente.

As can be seen, once the tank was assembled, the effects that were apparently very exaggerated, are more consistent with the whole, at least visually.
