[15mm] Pintando tanques de 2GM – 8ª Parte. Suciedad acumulada

Accumulated dirt

En esta ocasión sólo voy a explicar una única técnica, dentro del conjunto de los efectos de envejecimiento (weathering): la suciedad acumulada.

Os explico paso a paso como hacerlo y en que no debemos caer en esta técnica. Aunque en multitud de artículos que podemos encontrar por Internet, nos encontramos que no se explica del todo correctamente ni, en su mayoría, se explica el resultado final que debemos conseguir.

Es una técnica que si no nos entretenemos a mirar en fotografías reales, tanto de la época de la 2GM, como en la actualidad, podemos caer en el chabacanismo.

On this occasion I will only explain a single technique, within the set of the effects of weathering: accumulated dirt.

I explain step by step how to do it and how we should not fall for this technique. Although in many articles that can be found on the Internet, we find that it is not explained correctly or, in most cases, explains the final result that we must achieve.
It is a technique that if we do not entertain ourselves to look at real photographs, both from the time of the 2GM, as at present, we can fall into bad taste, as well as easy and poorly done work.

Creación de la suciedad acumulada / Creation of accumulated dirt

Esta técnica se realiza con pigmento y con diluyente para esmaltes (White Spirit).

Los pigmentos que he utilizado han sido:

- Tierra Europea de AK Interactive (AK-042).

- Siena Claro de Acrylicas Vallejo (Pigmento 104).

- Tierra Europea de Acrylicas Vallejo (Pigmento 119).

- Sombra Natural de Acrylicas Vallejo (Pigmento 109).

This technique is carried out with pigment and with White Spirit.
The pigments I have used have been:
- European Land of AK Interactive (AK-042).
- Siena Claro of Acrylicas Vallejo (Pigment 104).
- European Land of Acrylicas Vallejo (Pigment 119).
- Natural shade of Acrylicas Vallejo (Pigment 109).

Cogemos un poco de pigmento, el que creamos que vamos a utilizar y lo ponemos en un recipiente plástico o cerámico.

We take a little pigment, which we think we are going to use and put it in a plastic or ceramic container.

Con una pipeta vamos añadiendo diluyente, poco a poco, ya que la intención es hacer un poco de barro, no líquido tintado.

With a pipette we are adding diluent, little by little, since the intention is to make a little mud, not tinted liquid.

Esta consistencia a mí ya me sirve para este efecto de suciedad acumulada.

Los pigmentos, al mojarse, se oscurecen SIEMPRE. No os asustéis. Vuelve a su color original nada más secarse.

This consistency to me already serves me for this accumulated dirt effect.
The pigments, when wet, darken ALWAYS. Do not be scared It returns to its original color as soon as it dries.

Aplicación de la suciedad acumulada / Application of accumulated dirt

Este barro lo depositamos en rincones, no en todas partes. Yo aconsejo en las zonas frontales, superiores traseras y en la parte superior de los laterales. Para este trabajo, suelo utilizar un pincel plano o redondo, ambos pequeño (del nº 0 a ser posible), sea a la escala que sea que esté trabajando.

We put this mud in corners, not everywhere. I advise in the frontal zones, upper back and in the superior part of the lateral ones. For this work, I usually use a flat or round brush, both small (no. 0 if possible), whatever scale I'm working on.

Debemos untar bien la zona que queremos representar la suciedad acumulada. De momento no hay diferencia en la forma de aplicarlo para 15mm o para 1/35.

We must anoint well the area that we want to represent accumulated dirt. At the moment there is no difference in the way to apply it for 15mm or for 1/35.

Una vez seco el pigmento, este se ve de esta manera.

El pigmento mezclado con White Spirit seca mucho antes que con agua. En unos 20min ya se puede trabajar.

Once the pigment is dry, it looks like this.
The pigment mixed with White Spirit dries much earlier than with water. In about 20min you can work.

No nos debemos preocupara para nada en haber llenado más zona de la necesaria con el barro del pigmento. Ahora viene el momento de eliminarlo.

Para ello utilizaremos un bastoncito con algodón, que frotaremos para eliminar el exceso, intentando no eliminar el pigmento acumulado en los rincones.

We should not worry at all about having filled more area than necessary with the pigment mud. Now comes the time to eliminate it.
For this we will use a cotton swab, which we will rub to eliminate the excess, trying not to eliminate the pigment accumulated in the corners.

No debemos dejar mucha cantidad, pero si lo suficiente para que se vea. En 15mm debemos ser más cautelosos. Si dejamos la misma cantidad de pigmento queque en escalas superiores, el efecto visual es de exceso de polvo y suciedad. Demasiada suciedad. Y eso es malo.

We should not leave much quantity, but enough to see it. In 15mm we should be more cautious. If we leave the same amount of pigment as in higher scales, the visual effect is of excess dust and dirt. Too much dirt. And that is not good.

En esta foto podemos ver lo que habitualmente podemos ver lo que habitualmente se deja de este efecto, los que lo utilizan, en esta escala.

Por lo que debemos frotar un poco más y eliminar más exceso, dejándolo así.

So we should rub a little more and remove more excess, leaving it like this.

Evidentemente esto son consideraciones personales.

Recordar que el pigmento con White Spirit no queda enganchado a la miniatura, por lo que en algún momento deberemos aplicar fijador. Yo lo haré cuando termine el resto de efectos.

Evidently, these are personal considerations.
Remember that the pigment with White Spirit is not hooked to the miniature, so at some point we must apply fixative. I will do it when I finish the rest of the effects.

Efecto finalizado / Finished effect

Una vez eliminado el sobrante, los dos tanques Sherman con cañón de 76mm, quedan así.

Once the surplus is eliminated, the two Sherman tanks with a 76mm cannon remain like this.

Un ejemplo de lo que indicaba antes sobre el exceso de suciedad acumulada. En esta imagen se puede ver un hull del tanque acabado de forma genérica.

Yo lo veo demasiado excesivo.

Otros ejemplos en los que se puede observar como el polvo y la suciedad se han acumulado en ranuras y esquinas.

Other examples in which it can be observed how dust and dirt have accumulated in grooves and corners.

Personalmente prefiero incrementar la presencia de suciedad acumulada en la zona trasera de los Sherman. La zona de los tapones de los depósitos de combustible, ya se tratarán justamente en el siguiente efecto a realizar, por ello no he puesto nada en esas zonas, que deberían estar llenos.

Ranura, y bisagras, tanto de compuertas de los motores como de las escotillas, suelen ser las zonas más propensas a este tipo de suciedad.

Personally I prefer to increase the presence of accumulated dirt in the rear area of the Shermans. The zone of the plugs of the fuel tanks will already be treated precisely in the following effect to be carried out, for that reason I have not put anything in those areas, which should be full.
Slots, and hinges, both engine hatches and hatches, are usually the most prone to this type of dirt.

Pero debemos tener especial cuidado en no “obturar” las rejillas, ya que no es usual que se llenen de suciedad; aunque algo en algún punto, puede dar un interés visual muy aceptable.

But we must take special care not to "clog" the grilles, as it is not usual to fill with dirt; although something at some point, it can give a very acceptable visual interest.
