[Biblioteca] Escenografía para Wargames

WargamesTerrain

Although there are people who are not very happy with this book, nor with others from the warhammer sagas factory (manias that people sometimes take for "some" bad products), you should recognize not only the merit of taking out a book " teaching notions ”of how to create scenery, but thanks to this book there have been many of those who today create very good scenery that began with him.

This book is one of the few that this company structured it well, almost like an authentic modeling manual, with chapters with a logical correlation between the previous and subsequent ones. Its structure is very reminiscent of the manuals of that time and especially the "Manual of Modeling."

The images that I present to you are the scan of the book that I currently have, in English, which was a gift from a certain person that I have a great appreciation for, which worked at GW (thanks Ramonet), since the manual I got in his day, In Spanish, I lent it to those who did not owe, despite the fact that I would enter the world of mock-up. That book was lost, since the one who lent it was left to another person, and it was irretrievably lost, it is what has to make people not responsible for what is lent (and with books, even more).

The book, as I have indicated, is structured as a mock-up manual.
The first thing we can find is the chapter that talks about the necessary tools for this facet of the

Cutter, pencils, brushes, scissors, rules ... indicate the basic tools to create scenery.

Raft wooden slats, cork sheets (later they say using pen cardboard), expanded Pyrex, chopsticks, electrostatic boil, flock, tinted sawdust, ... and also indicate the most economical and easy to find materials, with which we will make The elements of the terrain.

And to create the bases of this scenery, they talk to us again about the Pórex, cork and corrugated cardboard!,one of the elements that he has demonstrated in many occasions to all the model makers, who soften by simply placing a tail in them.

Once they have explained the tools and materials that we must use for all our scenography, in 15 pages, they explain how to create the most basic elements, starting with the hills, the most used element in this type of wargames.

Regarding the trees, they indicate that it is best to buy them (how curious!), So they explain how to create forests, fixing these trees purchased on different types of land.

Although there is a part in which they indicate how to create trees based on real trunks caught in the mountain, and foam with sawdust hooked, since they do not market this tree size.
But nothing like making big trees.

Another element that is often placed on many occasions in this type of wargames, is the river.
For this, they recommend making them with corrugated cardboard, as seen in the photos of the initial work but, after wetting with glues, paints and varnishes, they present us with perfect rivers, but with a somewhat thinner base than corrugated cardboard (I I know that for the photos of the finished product they used plywood, since the people of GW often confessed it to me).

Therefore, on a personal basis, I advise that everything that is cardboard (corrugated cardboard of packaging boxes, cardboard of cereal boxes, ...) do not use it, if you want the work to come out not folded or combined.

If we ignore the use of the cardboard they recommend and we opt for the featherboard, foamed porch foamed PVC, the same thickness as the cardboard, but which does not affect the moisture of the glues and paints, the scenographies can be performed as it is Indicates and the same result will be obtained as in the photos of the works presented.

Another characteristic of the game boards when there is a river is the bridge.

These can be made independent or integrated in one of the sections of the modular rivers.

The marshes or swampy areas is an element that usually serves to prevent the miniatures from going through that scenery, and well done the result is very colorful.

The orography part of the land is extensive and explained in 18 pages, it goes to the explanation of the construction of buildings for Fantasy.

All the constructions presented are simple and simple to make. You don't need to be a great modeler to be able to create them.

The first building in a circular cabin, Celtic type, and a tower. Actually the two constructions are the same, but one taller than the other, and with different finishes.

For the construction of a more conventional house, farmhouse-type house, they even put a plan not to scale, even if with dimensions.

In this part of "buildings", apart from some very simple ruins, they also explain how to make walls, fences and hedges.

After 16 pages of these buildings, the most specific section of WH40K is passed.

Apart from the creation of stones and rocks with porex, which can well be used for practically all fantasy games, both medieval and Ci-Fi, they go on to other interesting topics, such as the creation of a tropical jungle, starting with palm trees and other more "extraterrestrial" plants.

They make a brief explanation of how to make craters.

In WH40K the buildings cannot be missing, since the vast majority of the games take place in the ruins of some population or the attack on a human or xeno camp.

An interesting information, especially for those who want to start with the construction of an industrial zone, is the section on the creation of scenography of pipes and other elements in accordance with the type of area that you want to make.

Todo este apartado lo explican en 17 páginas.

All this section is explained in 17 pages.

And finally, in the final 8 pages, they put photos of non-basic elements, somewhat more advanced, in which special projects of greater magnitude are seen, such as castles, very tall forests for the Silvan Elves, crashed ships, ...
But without any explanation of how it is done, they simply say that with the knowledge of this book you can get, with "something" of practice, to make these special projects (can anyone really believe it?).

In the end, I don't know why, they put back information on more tools. On this occasion, what they call specialists, who really should have been at the beginning of the book, since they are constantly talking about them during all the explanations of construction of scenic elements, such as the porter cutter, Mock-up drill, plastic card as an element cardboard replacement, pen cardboard, hot silicone gun, elements in photogravure...

It is interesting as a reference book to remember how to make a fast and spectacular scenic element, especially for those who have never done it and do not have the opportunity to consult someone with experience in the subject.

Personally I see that he treats readers as too neonates.
But it should be borne in mind that it is a 1996 book, and people who knew how to do scenery, shorter, shorter, so many of the techniques written in it, have proved unhelpful.

And with him many current model makers have entered the hobby, that is a great merit to take into account.
