28mm New Jersey Spacers
Recientemente Scenery Forge a sacado unos moldes nuevos para ambientar nuestras mesas de juego para Wargames. Estos moldes son columnas clásicas, Bidones de combustibles y separadores tipo New Jersey.
Las columnas clásicas son para edificios de todo tipo, desde la era de los griegos hasta la actualidad, pudiendo ser utilizados perfectamente en Fantasy y en Ci-Fi. Los bidones son para ambientaciones a partir de la 2GM y, como no, para Ci-Fi. Y los separadores New Jersey, para guerras modernas (a partir de 1950) y Ci-Fi.
Scenery Forge recently released some new molds to set our Wargames gaming tables. These molds are classic columns, fuel drums and New Jersey type separators.
The classic columns are for buildings of all kinds, from the era of the Greeks to the present, and can be used perfectly in Fantasy and Sci-Fi. The drums are for settings from the 2GM and, of course, for Sci-Fi. And the New Jersey spacers, for modern wars (from 1950 on) and Sci-Fi.
Y es justamente este último por el que he empezado.
And it is precisely the latter that I have started with.
Colada - Casting
Para la realización de estas piezas, se ha utilizado para la colada, la resina acrílica monocomponente Diplast, actualmente llamada Dusty.
Esta resina acrílica tiene varias ventajas. Primero que no caduca, segundo que puede ser utilizada en interiores, ya que no genera gases nocivos como el resto de resinas, y tercero, el catalizador se puede encontrar en cualquier parte: agua.
To make these pieces, the one-component acrylic resin Diplast, currently called Dusty, has been used for casting.
This acrylic resin has several advantages. First, it does not expire, second, it can be used indoors, since it does not generate harmful gases like other resins, and third, the catalyst can be found anywhere: water.
No hay que ser un gran entendido para la preparación de esta resina, ya que es la misma preparación que para hacer yeso, escayola o Aguaplast.
It is not necessary to be a great expert for the preparation of this resin, since it is the same preparation as for making plaster, plaster or Aguaplast.
Una vez seca esta resina, su textura es idéntica a la cerámica, incluso su sonido cuando cae, pero muchísimo más resistente que la cerámica, yeso o escayola. Evidentemente se rompe con la misma facilidad que una resina química normal.
Once this resin dries, its texture is identical to ceramic, even its sound when it falls, but much more resistant than ceramic, plaster or plaster. Obviously it breaks as easily as a normal chemical resin.
La colada se debe realizar bastante líquida, más que con el yeso o la escayola, ya que solidifica en pocos minutos y si no colocamos suficiente agua, mientras vertiendo la colada y se irá espesando según vamos terminando de verterlo. Y lo peor de no poner suficiente agua, que generará mucha burbuja que no conseguiremos que salgan al exterior.
The casting must be done quite liquid, more than with plaster or plaster, since it solidifies in a few minutes and if we do not put enough water, while pouring the laundry and it will thicken as we finish pouring it. And the worst of not putting enough water, which will generate a lot of bubble that we will not get to go outside.
La resina, a los 30 minutos, ya es apta para el desmoldeo, aunque aun tardará unas 24 h para poder trabajarla (lijado, cortado, pegado…).
The resin, after 30 minutes, is already suitable for demoulding, although it will still take about 24 hours to be able to work it (sanding, cutting, gluing ...).
Si se hace muy espesa la mezcla, como se ha indicado, será muy difícil eliminar las burbujas, quedando de esta forma las piezas.
If the mixture becomes very thick, as indicated, it will be very difficult to remove the bubbles, thus leaving the pieces.
En nuestro caso se ha realizado 3 coladas, por lo que tendrá suficientes piezas como para poder trabajar inicialmente. Más adelante se irá aumentando la cantidad de piezas para partidas de guerra moderna, principalmente.
In our case, 3 castings have been made, so you will have enough pieces to be able to work initially. Later the number of pieces for modern war games will be increased, mainly.
La diferencia entre una mezcla espesa y una liquida, se puede observar en el resultado final de las piezas. A la izquierda con grandes burbujas, a la derecha sin una sola burbuja.
The difference between a thick mixture and a liquid one can be seen in the final result of the pieces. On the left with large bubbles, on the right without a single bubble.
Las piezas con burbujas no se han eliminado, ya que se arreglará el fallo de otra forma.
The bubbled pieces have not been removed, as the bug will be fixed in another way.
Una vez desmoldadas y secas las piezas, ya se puede trabajar con ellas. Ahora solo resta saber como son realmente los separadores New Jersey.
Con este molde podemos realizar los dos modelos que existen de estos separadores. Por un lado tenemos el modelo sencillo, plano por un lado y con inclinación en el otro.
Once the pieces have been removed from the mold and dry, you can work with them. Now it only remains to know how the New Jersey spacers really are.
With this mold we can make the two existing models of these separators. On the one hand we have the simple model, flat on one side and inclined on the other.
Estas son tal como salen del molde y podemos tener 6 de este tipo de una sola colada.
These are as they come out of the mold and we can have 6 of this type in a single cast.
Y la segunda opción es la que por los lados tienen las mismas inclinaciones, que de estas obtenemos 3 piezas por desmoldeo.
And the second option is the one that has the same inclinations on the sides, from which we obtain 3 pieces by unmolding.
Y es justamente este último modelo el que se realiza para este artículo.
And it is precisely this last model that is made for this article.
Lijado, enmasillado e impactos – Sanding, caulking and impacts
Al unir dos partes entre sí, se observa que la mayoría de las piezas, debido a la poca cantidad de agua utilizada, no han cubierto bien el molde y han quedad algo desparejadas.
When joining two parts together, it is observed that most of the pieces, due to the little amount of water used, have not covered the mold well and have been somewhat uneven.
Primero alisaremos la parte lisa de la pieza. En este caso se ha utilizado limas de uñas para no eliminar demasiada cantidad de material, sino sólo lo justo para alisarlo. Se puede usar una hoja de lija fijada a la mesa, pero no se puede dominar tanto el lijado.
First we will smooth the smooth part of the piece. In this case, nail files have been used so as not to remove too much material, but only just enough to smooth it. You can use a sanding sheet attached to the table, but you can't master sanding that much.
Usar lijas especiales de maquetismo, pera esta material, es contraproducente, ya que la transferencia de material es considerable y no hay forma de eliminarla bien posteriormente, por lo que las limas de uñas de usar y tirar son ideales. Y se pueden encontrar de diferentes granos, unos más gruesos, para rebajar la uña, y otros más finos, para eliminar esmalte y alisar ligeras imperfecciones.
Una vez rebajada la parte plana, se puede comprobar que el encaje de las piezas es mucho mejor.
Using special modeling sandpaper, for this material, is counterproductive, since the transfer of material is considerable and there is no way to remove it well later, so disposable nail files are ideal. And they can be found in different grains, some thicker, to lower the nail, and others finer, to remove enamel and smooth out slight imperfections.
Once the flat part has been lowered, it can be seen that the fit of the pieces is much better.
Las dos partes de cada separador, se encolan entre ellas.
Para eta operación se ha utilizado cola blanca, ya que este material, una vez seco, es suficientemente poroso para que esta cola funcione bien. Aunque un pegamento de cianocrilato u otro de contacto pueden ir bien.
The two parts of each separator are glued together.
White glue has been used for this operation, since this material, once dry, is sufficiently porous for this glue to work well. Although a cyanoacrylate or other contact glue can go well.
Una vez encoladas, se observa que algunas piezas no encajan bien entre si. O nos hemos pasado con la lija o es que el vertido realizado era demasiado espeso y no han quedado del todo recto.
Para solventar este pequeño inconveniente, se ha utilizado la masilla acrílica de Vallejo.
Once glued, it is observed that some pieces do not fit well together. Either we have gone over with the sandpaper or it is that the pouring made was too thick and they have not been completely straight.
To solve this small inconvenience, Vallejo's acrylic putty has been used.
Esta masilla se coloca sobre las juntas de las piezas.
This putty is placed on the joints of the pieces.
Y se esparce, cubriendo las separaciones. En nuestro caso se ha optado por una espátula de pinturas al óleo, aunque un pincel humedecido también puede servir para repartir y alisar.
And it spreads, covering the gaps. In our case, a spatula for oil paints has been chosen, although a moistened brush can also be used to distribute and smooth.
Debemos poner masilla en cantidad suficiente, ya que al secar, mengua un poco y al ser unas separaciones lo suficientemente grandes, irá profundizando en la ranura.
We must put putty in sufficient quantity, since when it dries, it decreases a little and since the gaps are large enough, it will go deeper into the groove.
No os debe preocupar, ya que en unas horas está lo suficientemente seco como para poder trabajar la masilla, lijándola sin problemas.
It should not worry you, since in a few hours it is dry enough to be able to work the putty, sanding it without problems.
Con la masilla lijada y las piezas sin ranuras de separación, se ha utilizado un garfio de modelaje para “romper” las burbujas, para imitar impactos.
With the putty sanded and the pieces without separation grooves, a modeling grapple has been used to “break” the bubbles, to imitate impacts.
La resina acrílica, una vez seca, puede trabajarse. No es precisamente blando para trabajar, pero te permite trabajar en ella.
Con el garfio, además de romper las burbujas, se hacen líneas a modo de rotura por causa del impacto.
The acrylic resin, once dry, can be worked. It's not exactly soft to work with, but it does allow you to work on it.
With the grapple, in addition to breaking the bubbles, lines are made by way of breakage due to the impact.
El resultado final puede ser muy interesante.
The end result can be very interesting.
Incluso algunas de las que no tienen burbujas, se les ha practicado unas líneas más o menos paralelas, a modo de las rozaduras de algún vehículo sobre el hormigón de los separadores.
Even some of the ones that do not have bubbles, have been made more or less parallel lines, like the rubbing of a vehicle on the concrete of the spacers.

Pintado – Painted
Lo primero que se hace para le pintado de estas piezas, ha sido imprimaras con Gris Arena Israelí (Surface Primer 614), que le conferirá un tono no homogéneo a los siguientes pintados, y cierto tono arenoso de fondo.
The first thing that is done to paint these pieces has been primed with Israeli Sand Grey (Surface Primer 614), which will give a non-homogeneous tone to the following paintings, and a certain sandy background tone.
Para realizar una buena gradación inicial, se ha usado Negro (Model Air 057) en los impactos y en los bajos de las piezas.
To achieve a good initial gradation, Black (Model Air 057) has been used on the impacts and on the underside of the pieces.
Sobre la imprimación y el negro para la gradación, se aplica Gris Neutral (Model Air 051), a modo de color base.
On the primer and the black for gradation, Neutral Grey (Model Air 051) is applied as the base color.
En la zona superior, y siguiendo con la gradación, se aplica Gris Cemento (Model Air 045), para las primeras luces y para conferir ese tono ligeramente verdoso característico del cemento.
In the upper area, and continuing with the gradation, Cement Grey (Model Air 045) is applied, for the first lights and to give that slightly greenish tone characteristic of cement.
Y el último de los grises a aplicar ha sido el Gris Claro (Model Air 050), como luz cenital.
And the last of the greys to apply has been Light Grey (Model Air 050), as overhead light.
Para incrementar el efecto de rotura de los separadores, en especial para las partidas de Wargames, se aplica un Lavado Negro (Game Wash 201), y un ligero sombreado en la parte más baja de los separadores.
To increase the breaking effect of the spacers, especially for Wargames games, a Black Shade (Game Wash 201) is applied, and a light shading is applied to the lower part of the spacers.
Los separadores ya están terminados y listos para usar en partidas.
The dividers are already finished and ready to use in games.
Aguadas – Weathering
Sobre los separadores terminados, se aplican una serie de aguadas, para hacer un ensuciado ambiental.
Para ello se ha usado
- Gris Claro (Model Wash 515).
- Marrón Oscuro (Model Wash 514).
- Tierra desierto (Model Wash 522).
- Gris Azulado (Model Wash 524).
On the finished separators, a series of washes are applied, to make an environmental fouling.
For this, it has been used
- Light grey (Model Wash 515).
- Dark Brown (Model Wash 514).
- Desert Dust (Model Wash 522).
- Bluish grey (Model Wash 524).
La técnica utilizada es la misma que con óleos, usando como disolvente el Diluyente para Aerógrafo (Auxiliar 361).
The technique used is the same as with oils, using Airbrush Thinner (Auxiliary 361) as solvent.
Como se va a seguir usando técnicas de húmedas, se opta por barnizar con Mate.
As we will continue to use wet techniques, we choose to varnish with Matte.
Una vez seco el barniz, se aplica una nueva aguada con Lavado Verde (Game Wash 205), sólo en la parte superior.
Once the varnish is dry, apply a new wash with Green Shade (Game Wash 205), only on the upper part.
Y por último, se aplica un último lavado de Verde Oliva (Model Wash 519), en todos los bajos de los separadores, y se incrementa la luz de los desperfectos e impactos con luces planas de Gris Marina (Model Color 991-159).
And finally, a last wash of Olive Green (Model Wash 519) is applied to all the underside of the separators, and the light of damage and impacts is increased with flat lights of Dark Sea Grey (Model Color 991-159).
Todas las aguadas se han intensificado más en unas piezas que en otras. Incluso algunas no se han aplicado los verdes, ya que no se ha querido dar la sensación de moho.
All the washes have intensified more in some pieces than in others. Some have not even applied the greens, since they have not wanted to give the sensation of mold.
Al final los separadores han quedado así.

Grafitis y transferencias de pintura – Graffiti and paint transfers
Por último se han aplicado pintadas (más que grafitis) en algunos de los separadores.
Finally, graffiti has been applied to some of the spacers.
Para diseñar estos grafitis, se debe pensar que estos separadores estarán en zonas de conflictos armados, por lo que serán relativos a la contienda y se deben realizar lo suficientemente rápidos como para que la vida del artista no peligre en exceso.
Por ello se han diseñado sólo frases simples y algún dibujo de realización rápida (con los consiguientes churretones de la pintura por estar muy cerca o ir demasiado rápidos).
To design these graffiti, it must be considered that these separators will be in areas of armed conflict, so they will be related to the conflict and must be done quickly enough so that the artist's life is not excessively endangered.
For this reason, only simple phrases and some quick-to-do drawing have been designed (with the consequent splatters of paint due to being too close or going too fast).
Se ha usado colores diversos incluso rotuladores indelebles para ello.
Various colors including indelible markers have been used for this.
También se han usado lápices de colores acuarelables para realizar la transferencia de pintura de los vehículos que han chocado con los separadores, y las marcas de frenazos de las ruedas, al subirse sobre los separadores.
Watercolor colored pencils have also been used to transfer paint from vehicles that have collided with the spacers, and the braking marks of the wheels, when climbing on the spacers.
Las siguientes coladas será con menos impactos y se pintarán menos grafitis.
The following castings will be with less impacts and less graffiti will be painted.
