Craps Tower - Part 1 –
Assembly
Aunque es una simple pieza y quiero mostrar mostrar el Paso
a Paso (PaP) de como lo he realizado de una sola vez, para variar Blogspot no
me deja poner tantas fotografías ni tan extenso, y es por ello que debo
presentaros este trabajo en varias partes.

Para crear esta Torre de Dados, se adquirió una torre de
dados comercial, fabricada en DMF por un buen conocido, más como un favor que
como una necesidad.
To create this Dice Tower, a commercial dice
tower, manufactured in DMF by a good acquaintance, was purchased more as a
favor than a necessity.
Montaje de la Estructura - Structure Assembly
Como es habitúan el este tipo de madera, no podemos
encolarla con cola blanca, ya que es una madera prensada con muy poco poro, por
lo que al poner esta cola, en poco tiempo, ante cualquier leve golpe, se
desenganchará. Por ello tenemos que optar por una cola de dos componentes, tipo
Araldit, o como en este caso, con cianocrilato.
As this type of wood is common, we cannot glue
it with white glue, since it is a pressed wood with very little pore, so when
putting this glue, in a short time, before any slight blow, it will disengage.
For this reason we have to opt for a two-component glue, Araldit type, or as in
this case, with cyanoacrylate.
Esta pieza me llegó mal diseñada en muchos puntos.
Al poco de adquirirla se reclamó que me enviaran las piezas
correctas para su encaje, paro a día de hoy, a un año vista, todavía estoy
esperando que me las suministre.
This piece came to me poorly designed at many
points.
Shortly after acquiring it, they demanded that
they send me the correct pieces for their fit, but today, a year from now, I am
still waiting for them to supply them.
Lo que primero que se ve, es que la pieza frontal de la
torre, la que da al “patio de dados”, no tiene encajes, es lisa y debemos
engancharla directamente sobre los laterales.
The first thing that is seen is that the front
piece of the tower, the one facing the “dice yard”, has no lace, it is smooth
and we must hook it directly on the sides.
Esta torre si se desea moverla desmontada de un lado a otro,
para partidas en diferentes lugares (nuestro club, otros clubs, en tiendas…),
es difícil que se pueda montar sin que se desmonte durante la tirada de dados.
This tower if you want to move it disassembled
from one side to another, for games in different places (our club, other clubs,
in stores ...), it is difficult to be assembled without disassembling during
the roll of the dice.
También una de las rampas inclinadas no llega hasta la pared
de fondo, por lo que no se puede usar la torre de dados con dados pequeños, sino
de 12mm o superior. Dados de 10mm, no tan raros como la gente piensa, se cuelan
entre la rampa inferior y la pared posterior.
Lo que es curioso es que la mayoría de torres de dados es
algo más estrecha y algo más alta, ya que la mayoría de torres tiene 3 rampas
para el volteo aleatorio de los dados.
Un diseño de la torre, en conjunto, muy curioso. Ni bueno ni
malo, simplemente muy curioso.
Also one of the inclined ramps does not reach
the bottom wall, so the dice tower cannot be used with small dice, but 12mm or
higher. 10mm dice, not as rare as people think, slip between the bottom ramp
and the back wall.
What is funny is that most dice towers are
somewhat narrower and somewhat higher, since most towers have 3 ramps for
randomly turning the dice.
A design of the tower, altogether, very
curious. Neither good nor bad, just very curious.
Otra de la curiosidad es que la distancia entre las dos
rampas es escasa, por lo que dados de 19mm o superior, como por ejemplo
bastantes dados D20, quedan atorados entre las dos rampas.
Another curiosity is that the distance between
the two ramps is scarce, so that 19mm or higher dies, such as quite a few D20
dice, get stuck between the two ramps.
Y la parte visual que más se ve el error de dimensionado de
piezas de la torre, es la pieza posterior, que es casi 15mm corta.
And the visual part that sees the tower part
sizing error the most, is the rear part, which is almost 15mm short.
Ya tenemos montada la estructura vertical de la torre y
solventados algunos de los problemas que han surgido, ahora le toca el turno a
poner la base del conjunto.
We have already assembled the vertical
structure of the tower and solved some of the problems that have arisen, now it
is your turn to put the base of the set.
Para que la torre no se deslice en demasía por la mesa de
juego, se coloca fieltro adhesivo, que se puede encontrar en prácticamente
todas las papelerías. Este fieltro lo hay en azul, verde, rojo y marrón (aunque
creo que habrá otros colores, no lo sé).
Para este trabajo se ha adquirido el marrón.
Se forra la parte inferior de la base y, en este caso,
también la superior, para que los dados no rebroten en exceso.
So that the tower does not slide too much on
the game table, adhesive felt is placed, which can be found in practically all
stationeries. This felt is in blue, green, red and brown (although I think
there will be other colors, I don't know).
For this work brown has been acquired.
The lower part of the base is lined and, in
this case, also the upper part, so that the dice do not sprout excessively.

la estructura de la torre de dados terminada.
This piece is glued into position, and we have
already finished the structure of the finished dice tower.
El acabado también deja un poco mal sabor de boca, ya que no
podemos pintarlo en condiciones.
Esta torre de dados en vez de suministrarse en una bolsa, la
suministran atada con cinta adhesiva. Al sacar esta cinta adhesiva, se deja la
zona de contacto “despellejada” y no hay forma de poder darle el acabado deseado.
The finish also leaves a bit of a bad taste in
the mouth, since we cannot paint it properly.
Instead of being supplied in a bag, this dice
tower is supplied tied with adhesive tape. By removing this adhesive tape, the
contact area is left "skinned" and there is no way to give it the
desired finish.

Ahora está la estructura completamente terminada, pero se
debe hacer algo con ella, ya que entre los defectos visuales y los defectos de
“embalaje”, no se puede dejar así. Por lo menos para mí.
Now the structure is completely finished, but
something must be done with it, since between the visual defects and the
"packaging" defects, it cannot be left that way. At least for me.
Montaje de las paredes - Mounting the walls
Se pretende cubrir la estructura de la torre con porex para
poder dar el efecto de piedra a toda ella.
Para ello se calculan las paredes para un cartón pluma que
tengo por el taller, pero descubro que es muy difícil poder extraer el cartón
de uno de los lados, por lo que termino cortando las piezas con porex blanco
comprimido.
It is intended to cover the structure of the
tower with porex to be able to give the stone effect to all of it.
For this, the walls are calculated for a
featherboard that I have for the workshop, but I find that it is very difficult
to be able to extract the cardboard from one side, so I end up cutting the
pieces with compressed white porex.
Sobre este porex grabamos con uno de los rodillos de Green
Stuff, el efecto de piedras.
On this porex we engrave the effect of stones
with one of the Green Stuff rollers.
Este porex tiene un problema serio, que ya he comentado en
más de una ocasión: es un material con memoria.
¿Qué quiere decir que tiene memoria?, significa que una vez
grabado, el material vuelve a su posición original, por lo que se pierde el
efecto de lo grabado, como en este caso, se pierde gran parte de la profundidad
gravada.
This porex has a serious problem, which I have
already commented on more than one occasion: it is a material with memory.
What does it mean that it has memory? It means
that once recorded, the material returns to its original position, so the
effect of the recorded is lost, as in this case, much of the recorded depth is
lost.
Para solucionar (o eso creía yo) este problema de la memoria
de este tipo de porex, uso un punzón romo de modelaje, para profundizar entre
piedras, sobre las marcas dejadas con el rodillo
To solve (or so I thought) this memory problem
of this type of porex, I use a blunt modeling punch, to delve between stones,
on the marks left with the roller
Inicialmente utilicé un bolígrafo, pero recordé que por
mucho que lleve tiempo realizado este grabado, la tinta siempre transparenta la
pintura y nos deja un efecto feo en el trabajo. Si no se tiene un punzón de
modelaje, un bolígrafo sin tinta también puede servir.
Initially I used a ballpoint pen, but I
remembered that however long this engraving takes time, the ink always makes
the paint transparent and leaves us with an ugly effect on the job. If you
don't have a modeling stylus, an inkless pen can do the trick too.
Este material debemos encolarlo con cola blanca, que es la
que he utilizado, pero esperando mucho tiempo en su secado, ya que la madera
DMF y el porex son materiales sin porosidad, o utilizando una cola especial
para porex, que no tengo en estos momentos y que no es precisamente barata, que
nos da un resultado como la cola blanca, pero que actúa en una cuarta parte de
tiempo.
Si se usa pegamento universal, cianocrilato o cualquier otro
tipo de pegamento, este reaccionará con el porex, aumentando su temperatura y fundiéndolo,
pero sin conseguir que se enganche en ningún sitio.
We must glue this material with white glue,
which is the one I have used, but waiting a long time for drying, since DMF
wood and porex are materials without porosity, or using a special glue for
porex, which I do not have at the moment and that it is not exactly cheap, that
gives us a result like white glue, but that it acts in a quarter of the time.
If universal glue, cyanoacrylate or any other
type of glue is used, it will react with the porex, increasing its temperature
and melting it, but without getting it to catch anywhere.
La cola blanca la repartimos, aunque no uniformemente, en la
parte de la madera que queremos poner la pieza.
The white glue is distributed, although not
uniformly, on the part of the wood that we want to put the piece.
Con la propia pieza de porex, expandimos la cola por toda la
superficie, moviéndola en movimientos circulares.
With the porex piece itself, we spread the glue
over the entire surface, moving it in circular movements.
Lo que se consigue es que las caras de las dos piezas que
estarán en contacto, estarán impregnadas de la cola de forma uniforme.
What is achieved is that the faces of the two
pieces that will be in contact will be impregnated with the glue evenly.
La pieza de porex se coloca en su posición y una vez seco, se
procede de la misma forma con la siguiente pieza.
The porex piece is placed in its position and
once it is dry, proceed with the following piece in the same way.
Como inicialmente se ha calculado la dimensión de las caras
para un cartón pluma de espesor más fino que el porex que se ha colocado al
final, y no se han rectificado las medidas, se debe rehacer las piezas,
cortando más aún, por lo que quedan las esquinas sin juntarse. Como queda una
distancia sin unir las piezas de porex, esto permite que se pueda colocar un
perfil cuadrado de madera que nos reforzará la estructura, débil de por sí, del
porex.
As initially the dimensions of the faces have
been calculated for a feather board with a thinner thickness than the porex
that has been placed at the end, and the measurements have not been rectified,
the pieces must be redone, cutting even more, so they remain the corners
without coming together. As there is a distance without joining the porex
pieces, this allows a square wooden profile to be placed that will reinforce
the weak structure of the porex.
Estos perfiles de refuerzo son listones de madera para
maquetismo naval, de 4x4mm, que coincide con el espesor del porex.
These reinforcement profiles are wooden slats

Este listón lo cortamos con una sierra de marquetería, que
al ser tan grueso, con cúter podemos estropear la pieza a cortar, o tardar mucho,
o romper la cuchilla de corte.
We cut this strip with a marquetry saw, which
being so thick, with a cutter we can damage the piece to be cut, or take too
long, or break the cutting blade.
Esta herramienta se puede encontrar en ferreterías o tiendas
de manualidades. La que se ve en la imagen, que es idéntica a las que se pueden
adquirir en donde se ha indicado, lleva conmigo 44 años, ya que es de cuando
empecé con el maquetismo.
La hoja de corte, las hay de dos tipos y múltiples grosores.
Las planas van muy bien para cuando serramos en recto, pero que con demasiada
facilidad terminan rompiéndose durante el proceso de corte.
Con la que llevo años trabajando, que a mí me va muy bien y
os la recomiendo a todos, son las hojas helicoidales, retorcidas sobre sí
mismas, por lo que los dientes de la sierra están en todas las direcciones. Con
esta sierra podemos hacer cortes circulares, que con las hojas planas no se
pude hacer de una sola vez.
This tool can be found at hardware or craft
stores. The one seen in the image, which is identical to those that can be
purchased where indicated, has been with me for 44 years, since that is when I
started with model making.
The cutting blade, there are two types and
multiple thicknesses. The flat ones are very good for when we are straight, but
too easily they end up breaking during the cutting process.
With which I have been working for years, which
works very well for me and I recommend it to everyone, they are the helical
blades, twisted on themselves, so the teeth of the saw are in all directions.
With this saw we can make circular cuts, which with flat blades cannot be done
at once.
Con las esquinas reforzadas con las maderas, tendremos la
seguridad de que muchos de los golpes que pueda sufrir, tendrán pocas consecuencias.
With the corners reinforced with the woods, we
will be sure that many of the blows that you may suffer will have few
consequences.
Piedras de
esquinas - Corner stones
Ahora se debe “camuflar” las maderas para que parezcan
integradas en la edificación.
Para ello usaremos cartón un poco grueso, para imitar
piedras.
Now the woods must be "camouflaged"
so that they appear integrated into the building.
For this we will use cardboard a little thick,
to imitate stones.
Determinamos el ancho de las piedras y creamos dos largos.
We determine the width of the stones and create
two lengths.
Cortaremos una a una las piedras. Para esta operación,
recomiendo el uso de unas tijeras, ya que no es necesario que sean de un
acabado perfecto y preciso.
We will cut the stones one by one. For this
operation, I recommend the use of scissors, since it is not necessary that they
be of a perfect and precise finish.
Cortaremos una a una las piedras y daremos en uno de los
lados, un acabado desigual y redondeado, consiguiendo un aspecto como esta.
We will cut the stones one by one and give on
one side an uneven and rounded finish, achieving a look like this.
Realizamos bastantes de cada tipo para poder cubrir las
esquinas.
We make enough of each type to cover the
corners.
La colocación de estas piezas es intercalada por el tipo,
tanto en altura como en longitud.
The placement of these pieces is intercalated
by the type, both in height and length.
Una vez realizadas las cuatro esquinas del edificio (los
muros del “patio de dados”, los trabajaremos de diferente forma), se decide colocar una pieza más a la
estructura de la torre, para asegurar aún más la aleatoriedad del resultado de
los dados.
Para ello usaremos un rectángulo de madera de contrachapado,
de la mitad del hueco superior, que grabaremos con la forma de listones de
madera.
Once the four corners of the building have been
completed (we will work the walls of the “dice yard” in a different way), it is
decided to place one more piece on the tower structure, to further ensure the
randomness of the dice result.
For this we will use a rectangle of plywood,
half of the upper hole, which we will engrave in the shape of wooden slats.
Para este grabado se
ha usado un punzón de carpintero, que se puede conseguir en ferreterías y en
tiendas de suministros asiáticos, ya que no suele ser caro.
For this engraving a carpenter's punch has been
used, which can be obtained in hardware stores and Asian supply stores, since
it is usually not expensive.
Con el mismo punzón, o con la parte sin filo de una cuchilla
de modelismo, podemos grabar la textura de los listones de madera.
With the same punch, or with the blunt part of
a modeling blade, we can engrave the texture of the wooden slats.
Y esta pieza se coloca sobre la torre, en la zona más
alejada.
And this piece is placed on the tower, in the
most remote area.
Y lo último que se hace es colocar un murete alrededor del
hueco por el que se tiran los dados.
And the last thing to do is put a low wall
around the hole through which the dice are rolled.

Una vez terminada la torre, y en vista que el porex nos ha
eliminado casi toda la textura a causa de su memoria, se decide usar la torre
para hacer varias pruebas de elementos escenográficos, como por ejemplo
puertas, ventanas y el revocado de los muros, con el descascarillado y rotura
del mismo.
Once the tower was finished, and given that the
porex has eliminated almost all the texture due to its memory, it was decided
to use the tower to carry out various tests of scenographic elements, such as
doors, windows and the plastering of the walls , with chipping and breakage.
