[28mm] M3 Half-track Vehicle USA - Part 1. Gradation
El último vehículo que había realizado es el bombardero B-25 a escala 1/200, para partidas de WWII a 15mm, por lo que he optado por seguir con el mismo color base, pero con otros vehículos de diferente escala.
The last vehicle I had made is the 1/200 scale B-25 bomber, for WWII games at 15mm, so I have chosen to continue with the same base color, but with other vehicles of a different scale.
Los norteamericanos pintaron todos sus vehículos en fábrica, tanto terrestres como aéreos, con el mismo color US Olive Drab. Evidentemente durante el transcurso de la guerra y dependiendo del fabricante de la pintura y de la disponibilidad sobre el terreno, el tono podía variar de más verde a más marrón, por lo que en fotografías en color de la época y en algún museo militar, podemos ver diferentes vehículos con variaciones sustanciales de este color, llegando incluso a ver en algún museo militar europeo, tanques americanos casi marrones.
The Americans painted all their vehicles at the factory, both ground and air, with the same US Olive Drab color. Obviously during the course of the war and depending on the paint manufacturer and availability on the ground, the tone could vary from greener to more brown, so in color photographs of the time and in a military museum, we can see different vehicles with substantial variations in this color, even seeing almost brown American tanks in a European military museum.
Pero no quiero entrar en discusión de criterios que en muchas ocasiones se han usado como excusa para desacreditar trabajos de maquetistas. Para eso están los foros de trolls y algunos grupos de Facebook.
Cualquier tono, más verde o más marrón, sirve para pintar estos vehículos.
But I do not want to enter into a discussion of criteria that have been used on many occasions as an excuse to discredit the works of model makers. That's what trolls forums and some Facebook groups are for.
Any shade, greener or more brown, can be used to paint these vehicles.
En estos momentos estoy realizando un pequeño ejército a 28mm de norteamericanos, una unidad de Recon, ampliamente conocida por la gente de mi generación, ya que el sargento al mando de esta unidad era Big Joe, aunque todos hacían más caso a un capitán degradado a soldado, llamado Kelly.
Si estoy hablando de hacer la unidad Recon de Los Violentos de Kelly (el título original del film era Kelly’s Heroes).
Curiosamente en la película los vehículos que llevaban eran dos cañones de 75mm Howitzer montados en sendos M-3 semiorugas (nunca he entendido como una unidad Recon lleva dos cañones móviles, además son más característicos del frente italiano y no del francés de la película) y dos jeeps.
Yo he cambiado los M-3 Howitzer, por los de transporte de tropas.
At the moment I am conducting a small army at 28mm of North Americans, a Recon unit, widely known by people of my generation, since the sergeant in command of this unit was Big Joe, although everyone paid more attention to a captain demoted to soldier, named Kelly.
If I'm talking about doing the Recon unit from Kelly’s Heroes (in Spain it was renamed Los Violentos de Kelly).
Curiously, in the film the vehicles they carried were two 75mm Howitzer guns mounted on two M-3 half-tracks (I have never understood how a Recon unit carries two mobile guns, they are also more characteristic of the Italian front and not the French one in the film) two jeeps.
I have changed the M-3 Howitzer, for the troop transport.
Para ello estoy utilizando los M-3 semiorugas de la marca Rubicon Models, con un buen detallado exterior, que lleva la opción de poder ponerle una radio, muy adecuada para una unidad Recon.
Esta pieza la monto a falta de terminar de completar, ya que más adelante debo poner a los conductores en su posición, post-pintado.
For this I am using the M-3 half-tracks of the Rubicon Models brand, with a good exterior detail, which has the option of being able to put a radio, very suitable for a Recon unit.
This piece is assembled in the absence of completion, since later I must put the conductors in their position, post-painted.
El montaje es muy simple y casi no se debe seguir el manual de instrucciones para ello.
Para el pintado del color base y su gradación de este modelo (lo que algún fabricante ha llamado modulación), he optado por utilizar el Set de colores para aerografía específico para vehículos de esta época de Vallejo Verde Oliva USA (AFV Painting System 402).
The assembly is very simple and you hardly have to follow the instruction manual for it.
For the painting of the base color and its gradation of this model (what some manufacturer has called modulation), I have chosen to use the Vallejo US Army Olive Drap Color Set for specific airbrushing for vehicles of this era (AFV Painting System 402).
Los colores que lleva este set son más que suficientes para una correcta gradación de los modelos que iban pintados de Verde Oliva USA, aunque los botes que vienen son de la mitad de capacidad de lo habitual, de 8ml y no de 17ml.
Pero más que suficiente como para pintar un par de vehículos a escala 1/35 o unos cuatro de 28mm.
También hay que tener en cuenta que está diseñado para que el pintor no deba tener que buscar los colores más adecuados para esta gradación o para los que empiezan poder iniciarse en el maravilloso mundo de la gradación de vehículos.
Es perfecto para que podamos practicar la gradación del color y le perdamos el miedo a ello. Podríamos decir que esta gama de cajas son unos set de iniciación a la aerografía y al ensuciado ambiental.
El precio de estos set no es caro, ya que se puede encontrar habitualmente a partir de unos 10€, aunque de vez en cuando se pueden encontrar en ofertas por 5€, en especial en el supermercado del hobby (aka GTS).
The colors in this set are more than enough for a correct gradation of the models that were painted US Army Olive Drap, although the cans that come are half the capacity of the usual, 8ml and not 17ml.
But more than enough to paint a couple of 1/35 scale vehicles or about four 28mm.
It should also be borne in mind that it is designed so that the painter should not have to look for the most suitable colors for this gradation or for those who are just beginning to be able to start in the wonderful world of vehicle grading.
It is perfect for us to practice color grading and lose our fear of it. We could say that this range of boxes is a starter set to airbrushing and Weathering.
The price of these sets is not expensive, since they can usually be found from around € 10, although from time to time they can be found in offers for € 5, especially in the hobby supermarket (aka GTS, chain of stores in Spain).
El primer color que se aplica, es el Verde Oliva USA (Surface Primer 608), imprimación en todo el vehículo.
The first color that is applied is US Army Olive Drab (Surface Primer 608), a primer throughout the vehicle.
Al mismo momento se aprovecha para imprimar a los conductores con Gris (Surface Primer 601) y a la ametralladora Browning .50 Cal con Negro (Suface Primer 602).
At the same time, it is used to prime the conductors with Gray (Surface Primer 601) and the Browning .50 Cal machine gun with Black (Suface Primer 602).
Que se pintarán más adelante.
Ahora llega el trabajo de gradación, que se realiza todo con aerógrafo.
Y se empieza con el color más oscuro, el Oliva Amarillo (Model Air 013), que se aplica en la parte más bajas, en zonas que llevan sombra y en recovecos, como en los bajos de las ruedas y de las orugas.
That will be painted later.
Now comes the gradation work, which is all done with an airbrush.
And it starts with the darkest color, Yellow Olive (Model Air 013), which is applied in the lower parts, in areas that have shade and in nooks, such as the underside of the wheels and tracks.
Como no se ha conseguido aplicar correctamente este tono donde interesaba, se aplica con pincel en las juntas entre chapas.
As this tone has not been applied correctly where it was of interest, it is applied with a brush on the joints between sheets.
No se debe olvidar el interior del vehículo, que se ha optado por pintar todo el suelo con este color, así como los recovecos y cajones de los asientos.
You should not forget the interior of the vehicle, which has chosen to paint the entire floor with this color, as well as the recesses and drawers of the seats.
Frontales y laterales de la cabina tampoco se salvan de este color.
Front and side of the cabin are not spared from this color either.
La parte trasera es una de las partes que más intensamente se debe aplicar este color, ya que los cajones de lonas ofrecen mucha sombra bajo ellas.
The back is one of the parts that should be applied more intensely this color, since the canvas drawers offer a lot of shade under them.
Las piezas que se montarán más tarde también se pintan ahora, en especial en la parte inferior de cada una de ellas.
The parts that will be assembled later are also painted now, especially on the bottom of each part.
El siguiente color a aplicar es el Verde USA (Model Air 016), que se aplica en la parte intermedia de todo el vehículo.
The next color to apply is US Dark Green (Model Air 016), which is applied to the middle of the entire vehicle.
En la siguiente imagen se puede ver la diferencia entre el color más oscuro, en la parte inferior del vehículo, y este color más claro, en la parte superior.
In the following image you can see the difference between the darker color, in the lower part of the vehicle, and this lighter color, in the upper part.
En el interior se aplica en los asientos y respaldos.
Inside, it is applied to the seats and backrests.
Se debe aplicar en el frontal y toda la zona superior del vehículo, ya que es más iluminada por el sol. Se tendrá especial cuidado en no cubrir el color oscuro en las juntas de chapas y entre las lamas del radiador.
It should be applied to the front and the entire upper area of the vehicle, as it is more illuminated by the sun. Special care will be taken not to cover the dark color in the sheet metal joints and between the radiator slats.
Se trabaja la parte trasera dejando el color más oscuro bajo las cajas y en los bajos de todos los elementos.
The back part is worked leaving the darker color under the boxes and on the bottom of all the elements.
En los elementos independientes, se aplica en las partes superiores y en los laterales.
In the independent elements, it is applied on the upper parts and on the sides.
El Marrón Oliva (Model Air 043), se aplica en la parte superior del vehículo, a modo de nueva iluminación.
Olive Drab (Model Air 043), is applied to the upper part of the vehicle, as a new lighting.
La diferencia de tonos y la gradación del vehículo empieza a notarse.
The difference in tones and the gradation of the vehicle begins to be noticed.
En el interior se aplica en los asientos, parte superior de los respaldos.
In the interior it is applied in the seats, upper part of the backrests.
Lo mismo se hace con la parte trasera del vehículo.
The same is done with the rear of the vehicle.
Aunque se incidirá poco en las piezas sueltas.
Although there will be little impact on the loose parts.
El último color que se aplica a esta gradación será el Gris Verde Claro (Model Air 044), sobre partes superiores y detalles salientes, como máxima iluminación.
The last color to be applied to this gradation will be US Grey Green (Model Air 044), on upper parts and prominent details, as maximum illumination.
Con este tono se consigue un cierto “desvaído” del color original. Una iluminación y desgaste simultáneo. Para intensificar este desgaste y hacerlo creíble, ya se volverá más adelante, no hay que incidir ahora.
With this tone a certain "fading" of the original color is achieved. Simultaneous lighting and wear. To intensify this wear and make it credible, it will come back later, there is no need to influence now.
En el interior, se aplica este color de forma somera, apartando mucho el aerógrafo del vehículo.
Inside, this color is applied shallowly, moving the airbrush far away from the vehicle.
Se incide mucho con este color en el capó del vehículo y en el frontal. Este color se aplica básicamente de forma cenital.
There is a lot of impact with this color on the hood of the vehicle and on the front. This color is basically applied zenithal.
También de forma cenital se aplica sobre las tapas de los cajones posteriores.
Also in a zenithal way it is applied on the lids of the rear drawers.
Y lo mismo con las piezas separadas.
And the same with the separate pieces.
Una vez tengamos el color de la gradación bien seco, pintaremos los retalles y elementos de equipo del vehículo (herramientas, asientos, ganchos…), pero eso será en la segunda parte.
Once we have the color of the gradation very dry, we will paint the details and elements of the vehicle's equipment (tools, seats, hooks ...), but that will be in the second part.
Por cierto, un conocido me comentó que si esta gradación puede hacerse de otra forma que no sea con aerógrafo. Si queremos obtener el mismo resultado, la respuesta es NO. Aunque podemos obtener algo muy aproximado aplicando los mismo colores y en las mismas zonas con la técnica de la espuma.
Que si os interesa ya os la explicaré en otra ocasión.
By the way, an acquaintance told me that if this gradation can be done in another way than with an airbrush. If we want to obtain the same result, the answer is NO. Although we can obtain something very approximate by applying the same colors and in the same areas with the foam technique.
