[28mm] Vikings base and final photos

We already have the minis painted and now it's time to place them on their bases and, of course, “dress them”.

And I will try to make a SbS of how I make the bases

Texturado y pintado del terreno – Textured and painted the terrain

As always, the first thing I do is texture the base. For this I have used the usual mix for bases that I have commented to you in multiple works, based on 4 or 5 different types of sand.

Fine sand, desert type, or large stones are not included in this mix. I have both in other cans, which I use for other bases or to give more strength to certain panels, bases or dioramas.

For these bases I place a good amount of white glue and immerse them in the aforementioned jar, which I will remove after a minute or so, removing the excess and letting it dry for more than 2 hours, to avoid dragging elements during painting that could spoil my Brushes.

As you know, I usually carry out this operation late at night, and let it dry until the next day, usually in the afternoon.

Before starting the painting, I usually shake the base and tap gently under the base, keeping it with the miniatures towards the ground, to remove the sand and gravel that have not come into contact with the white glue.

The color of the sand and gravel used matters little to me, since I always paint this mixture, so for me the important thing is the sizes of the elements used.

In the case of not wanting to paint the terrain, for whatever reason, I have other sands and mixtures of a single color.

Los colores utilizados para el pintado son:

- Amarillo Piedra (Model Color 882 – 118).

- Lavador Sepia (Game Wash 300).

- Arena Marrón (Model Color 878 – 123).

- Carne Oscura (Model Color 927 – 019).

- Beige (Model Color 917 – 008).

The colors used for painting are:

- Middlestone (Model Color 882 - 118).

- Sepia (Game Wash 300).

- Brown Sand (Model Color 878 - 123).

- Dark Flesh (Model Color 927 - 019).

- Beige (Model Color 917 - 008).

The first color to use is Middlestone, which will be the base color.

The difference between the original color of the mixture and the new greenish tone can be seen in this photo.

This paint will serve to cover all the sand deposited on the base, which should be the base coat.

If we have allowed to dry properly, no stone should chip out of the multiple sizes of gravel used.

It really does not matter if it completely covers the entire base, or if the color is introduced between the texture, since in the following processes everything will be well covered.

Between the step of painting with the Stone color and the Sepia Wash that follows, we must let it dry for at least 20 minutes, so that we do not eliminate the first color with the wash. The reason is very simple; The latter being a very wet color, it can become a diluent for the color previously placed and we can run the risk of eliminating it from large areas of the base, so that the following works will not be as we wish to have in the final result.

We dilute this Sepia wash with 50% water.

By the way, being in the school of fine arts, many years ago, they already warned us that we should dilute the acrylics with Distilled Water, if possible. The reason is the lime that the tap water carries in many areas of Spain. This lime can vary the tone, and even the color, of some acrylics on the market.

Since I started to paint the models with water-based paints, from the age of 14 or 15, using water was not a problem for me. When I arrived at the School of Fine Arts, at the age of 18, as I still did not have a problem of any kind, I did not understand what the teachers were referring to.

But as soon as I change neighborhood to live, at 50 years old, I have understood why. Since I was born until I moved at age 50, I was living in the Horta / Carmel neighborhood of Barcelona, which has almost no impurity water, since the water comes from Rec de Montcada. Currently, even being in the same district, but in the Sant Genis neighborhood, I have discovered that the lime of the water distorts my colors. Using those of Vallejo, he lightens them slightly. Other manufacturers, I slightly change the tone. This is not a problem with the pigment, but with the base in which the pigment is mixed to create the acrylic.

They are simple chemical subjects, but long to explain, that if you want to expand the subject, you should look for this Info on the Internet.

The reason for using the cuttlefish wash reduced in water is so that it is deposited in the depressions of the ground, between the gravels, to give depth to the base.

The contrast between Stone Yellow and this Sepia Wash can be seen in the following image.

Once the lift has been used on the entire base, we must allow this new color to dry well, about 10 minutes, to be sure not to merge with the next color.

We already have the darkened base, with a depth effect, and with a greenish tone in the background.

Now he has to use the Brown Sand, which I have applied with a semi-dry brush, applied with soft strokes and with a brush with non-rigid bristles.

The difference between Sepia and this new brown, it looks like this.

When I finish applying the Brown Sand, I have a base with a slight greenish tone, with a credible earth color and with shadows between the elements of the applied sand.

The next color that I have put, with a dry brush, is Dark Flesh, which gives it a lighting and a tone much closer to the natural color.

And the last color is Beige, applied as a dry brush, but much drier and with almost no paint on the brush.
